Umoja Now is a Burundian based nonprofit organization, with our Head Office in Holyoke, MA, focused on achieving gender equality, and ending sexual and gender based violence. Our goal is to bring men and women together to promote gender justice and end sexual and gender-based violence through education and training, social policy development and advocacy, economic development, promotion of arts and culture, and partner collaboration.
The organization was co-founded by Pascal Akimana and Kelly Jones in 2012. Umoja Now held its first official Board meeting in February, 2012 in Bujumbura, Burundi, when several of the board members joined Kelly and Pascal there to conduct a needs assessment, meet with potential partner organizations and social justice leaders, and participate in community work.
Umoja Now hopes to be on the cutting edge of gender justice by creatively combining law, policy, social work, and development in the pursuit of gender equality. To that end, we unite professionals and students from all disciplines, cultures, and genders, to create programs at the forefront of gender justice work.
